busan stories (V Day)
Today is Valentine's day.
What a load of crap.
Don't get me wrong. I'm not against making that special someone in your life feel special and cared for. I'm all for it. Lord knows, if they've put up with you for this long, they should get a "thank you" parade. Heck, if it was that I'd suggest a few more V Days throughout the year. What harm is there in celebrating that special relationship? But much to the wrinkles and worry of bfs, husbands and soon to be either out there, V Day has become twisted and tainted into a cumbersome weight of expectation and anticipation.
The co-worker who sits across from me got a bouquet of flowers this week. One dozen, ruby red blooming roses. What more can a girl ask for? She even got compliments on how beautiful those roses are. Wow, her husband must really love her. What a special guy to send her such beautiful ephmerals of affection. But then day two hits and the girl who sits right next to her just got longer, red~er, more beautiful roses. They dwarf the ones that received so many compliments only one moon earlier. Now those have been downgraded to "minimum" status. As in your husband cares just enough for you to not forget V Day, but your neighbor on the other hand is loved, cherished and adored by her beau. V Day has become a social status. And if any guy is foolish enough to utter, "but I care for you more than roses, chocolates and jewelry can say", he's stupid enough to deserve the beating that's coming to him.
Do you know who else needs a beating?
The guy who actually buy into all this and unleash lavish gifts on his yuj. Like the competition among the women isn't bad enough, that one guy who ends up breaking the rules and booking a getaway vacation, ridiculous jewelry or Chanel handbag ruining it for any of the other guys from standing a chance. What's wrong with a camping trip, sharing a ring pop and Channel handbag (3 for $15 in Chinatown) for V Day? Therefore, what you did last year isn't nearly enough. Even if you started with the humble ring pop, the next year you'd have to upgrade to jolly rancher, hershey kiss, Russel Stover chocolate (they won't stop with those damn commercials), Godiva... and before you know it, you're celebrating your 10th V Day together by buying her a cocoa plant in Peru and naming it after her favorite dog. Thank goodness for the clueless guys who worry so much they end up getting chocolate from Walgreens, jewelry from BigAssDiamonds.com or anything in red. They bring out the average and you can always say, "At least I didn't get you a pair of red socks from Target that read "Be Mine"". So you my friend, who keeps screwing the rest of us level-headed men can meet my friend, Thunder and his pal, Lightening.
That is all!
